Investigation Report on Missing Explosives to be Delivered to Defense Minister on Friday

The report of the internal, disciplinary investigation by the Ministry of Defense regarding the disappearance of 13.6 kilograms of explosives from a firing range is expected to be delivered to Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas on Friday. The investigation was conducted after the loss was discovered and is expected to reveal the responsibilities for the incident. The Minister of Defense reiterated that “we are responsible from the moment the explosives disappeared.” According to the Minister, the report was delivered by the investigating officer to another senior officer due to his impending retirement. This officer will study the report and inform the Minister. Mr. Palmas stated that disciplinary sanctions are the responsibility of the Chief of the National Guard, while criminal responsibilities are being investigated by the Police. The Minister declined to comment further until he had studied the report. The report will be officially delivered to the Police for further investigation. Questions about why the investigation was assigned to an officer who was about to retire were answered by Mr. Palmas, who stated that there is no gap, as ranks within the National Guard are reviewed annually. The incident occurred a few weeks ago and the retirement of the specific officer was not a given.
