The European Commission is expected to adopt the Schengen evaluation report for Cyprus this Spring, paving the way for the country's potential accession to the Schengen area. European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that Cyprus has made significant progress in all technical requirements, making the decision for accession a political one. The Commission fully supports Cyprus' efforts and is working closely with Cypriot authorities to achieve this goal. Schengen is considered a significant achievement of the EU, offering freedom of movement and boosting tourism and trade. Mr. Brunner noted that illegal border crossings have decreased by more than half compared to 2023, thanks to the implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact. The EU has also adopted new measures, such as the concept of a safe third country and a common list of safe countries of origin. Cyprus is receiving €290 million in support from the EU for the period 2021-2027, in order to address the challenges in the field of migration and asylum.
