Tzitzikostas: Comprehensive Cyprus Solution an Absolute EU Priority

European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, stated that a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue remains an absolute priority for the European Union. During the presentation of the Cypriot Presidency's program of activities in the Plenary Session of the European Parliament, he expressed his confidence that the Presidency will be a great success for Europe. Tzitzikostas emphasized that the guiding principle of the Cypriot Presidency for an autonomous Union, open to the world, aligns with the ambitions of the Commission, especially during a period of international transformation. He expressed the unacceptable situation that an EU member state, Cyprus, remains under occupation in 2026. Furthermore, he welcomed the emphasis placed by the Cypriot Presidency on security and defense, calling for a doubling of efforts to implement the initiatives undertaken to strengthen the EU's defense readiness. Regarding Ukraine, Tzitzikostas stressed the importance of continued support. Finally, he referred to migration, expressing the Commission's appreciation for the Cypriot Presidency's intention to prioritize the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact, as well as reaching an agreement in the trilateral consultations on returns.
