Trump Prefers Diplomatic Solution with Iran, Pence Says

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated today that President Donald Trump continues to favor a diplomatic solution with Iran, hoping that Tehran will take this seriously into consideration in tomorrow's negotiations. Vance emphasized that Trump is clear: Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon, and the attempt to achieve this goal must be through diplomacy. However, he avoided commenting on the possible removal of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, from power. Simultaneously, the U.S. government imposed new economic sanctions on Iran, targeting the weakening of the regime and limiting its oil revenues. The sanctions target four Iranians, companies, and twelve ships involved in circumventing the U.S. embargo and financing terrorist organizations and arms programs. Trump accused Iran of developing missiles that threaten Europe and U.S. bases, as well as attempting to acquire more powerful weapon systems that could strike the United States. These statements preceded the talks between the two sides in Geneva. The imposition of sanctions and Trump's accusations coincide with the U.S. effort to put pressure on Iran, while at the same time expressing a preference for a peaceful resolution of differences.
