Christodoulides-Erhurman Meeting: New Meeting Soon, Directions Given to Negotiators on Confidence-Building Measures

President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman met at the residence of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Hasim Diyan, and discussed Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) and the substance of the Cyprus issue. During the meeting, which lasted approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, guidelines were given to the negotiators on the CBMs and a new meeting of the two leaders was agreed upon soon. President Christodoulides stated that he has written to the UN Secretary-General for a meeting within March and plans to convene a National Council for information and exchange of views. The discussion focused on reviewing the CBMs, the progress made and the delays, as well as the proposal to open crossings, including that of Ledra. The President stressed that the goal of the meetings is to restart substantial negotiations with full assurance of the acquis, reaffirming political equality as defined by the UN Security Council. The issue of foot-and-mouth disease was not discussed and no joint statement will be issued.
