Cypriot Livestock Farmers Issue Ultimatum to Government Over Foot-and-Mouth Culling

Cypriot livestock farmers have issued an ultimatum to the government until next Tuesday, March 17th, to receive answers to questions regarding the culling of animals due to foot-and-mouth disease. The decision was made after a protest and road blockade, in response to the refusal of an exemption from the obligation to cull all animals in units with outbreaks. The farmers are threatening dynamic mobilizations, such as blocking major roads and airports, if they do not receive satisfactory answers. The president of the parliamentary committee on Agriculture announced that he will cancel the agenda of Tuesday's meeting to discuss exclusively the issue of foot-and-mouth disease, with the participation of the Ministers of Finance and Agriculture. The farmers are also preparing mass appeals to the court to stop the culling of animals. During their protest, they carried a coffin and banners, expressing their anger and outrage over the culling. Police were present at the scene, but did not need to intervene.
