Low Vitamin D Levels Linked to Increased Hospitalization Risk

A new study from the University of Surrey, published in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” shows that severe vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher risk of hospitalization for respiratory infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. The analysis of data from 36,258 participants revealed that individuals with vitamin D levels below 15 nnmol/L were 33% more likely to be hospitalized for a respiratory infection compared to those with sufficient levels (at least 75 nmol/L). Furthermore, it was found that for every 10 nmol/L increase in vitamin D, the risk of hospitalization decreased by 4%. Researchers emphasize the importance of consuming vitamin D-rich foods and taking supplements to prevent such situations.
