AKEL Criticizes Government's Water Management Strategy, Demanding Concrete Actions

AKEL is strongly criticizing the government for its lack of strategy in addressing the water problem, emphasizing that announcements do not fill the dams. Christiana Nikolaou, Head of the AKEL Environment Sector, is calling for the immediate presentation of a comprehensive strategy with clear timelines for water resource management, covering dams, networks, desalination plants, and support for farmers. AKEL's criticism focuses on the government's delay in taking action, despite warnings from scientists and concerns from farmers. The party is calling on the government to compensate affected producers and proceed with specific actions without further delay. Specifically, AKEL is raising questions about the completion of the Tsersefanos dam, the improvement and restoration of water networks, the completion of desalination plants and their operation with alternative forms of energy, as well as the cost of desalinated water to the consumer. Furthermore, the party questions the continued allocation of water to golf courses, given the criticality of the situation. AKEL emphasizes the need for a comprehensive water plan, based on science, with support for the primary sector and respect for the citizen, rejecting further delays and excuses. The emphasis is on the need for substantial actions and not just announcements in order to effectively address the water problem in Cyprus.
