Organic Waste: From Delay to Opportunity for Real Change in Cyprus

The implementation of separate organic waste collection in Cyprus has been delayed despite being legally mandated since 2024 due to local government reforms. Now, with progress on studies for the “Pay-as-you-throw” system, the issue is shifting from “if” to “how.” Organic waste constitutes the largest fraction of municipal waste, and its diversion from landfills reduces methane production and soil and water pollution. The success of separate collection relies on the quality of sorting at the source, requiring public guidance, appropriate equipment, and oversight, particularly for large producers like hotels and supermarkets. A phased approach, starting with large producers, is considered a technically sound solution to gain experience before expanding to households.
