Trump's Dilemmas for Cyprus

The election of Donald Trump to the American presidency creates new dilemmas for Cyprus, both in relation to European policy and regional developments. Initially, Cyprus found itself in an awkward position due to the tariffs imposed by Trump on Europe, as it had to manage its relations with the US and the EU. More recently, Trump's proposal for a "Peace Council" for Gaza has put Cyprus in a difficult position, as the government, although initially considering the invitation a success, was forced to back down due to reactions from European partners. Cyprus, despite its interest in strengthening relations with the US and exploiting the "Amalthea" plan, does not want to distance itself from the cohesive stance of the EU. Furthermore, Turkey's involvement in Trump's Gaza plan requires particular attention. Another issue of concern is Trump's obsession with acquiring Greenland, which exacerbates relations with Europe. Cyprus, as Presidency of the EU, is obliged to support decisions taken at European level, which further complicates the management of relations with the US.
