DISY Proposes Eight Measures to Combat Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The Democratic Rally (DISY) expressed strong concern over the outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, emphasizing that its warnings about the need for stricter surveillance measures have been confirmed. DISY accuses the government of insufficient implementation of preventive measures and calls for immediate action to address the crisis. Specifically, DISY calls for the immediate declaration of protection zones, strengthening of controls, complete tracing of animal and animal product movements, and financial support for affected livestock farmers. It also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding halloumi exports, a significant product for the Cypriot economy. DISY also proposes examining the possibility of targeted vaccination in high-risk zones, in consultation with European authorities, as a complementary measure to limit the spread of the disease. In addition, it calls for the immediate development and activation of a special plan to ensure halloumi exports, with strict health compliance certification and enhanced traceability. DISY commits to closely monitoring developments, exercising control over the government, and submitting specific proposals to protect livestock farming, exports, and producers' income. It believes that protecting the agricultural economy does not allow for delays or fragmented actions.
