Erhurman Proposes Four New Checkpoints

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Erhurman, proposed four new checkpoints, from Mia Milia to Pyrgos and Louroutzina, as part of a new approach to resolving the Cyprus issue. He is focusing on the reuse of 'common powers' based on political equality in areas such as hydrocarbons, energy, maritime zones, trade routes, security and EU citizenship. Erhurman stated that he will not name the form of the solution before the procedures and methodology of the discussions are finalized. He believes it is wrong to delve into the substance before the preparations for the methodology are complete, as simply naming the model of the solution will not create progress. He emphasized that the will to resolve must be measured not only at the negotiating table but also by actions in everyday political practice, referring to the importance of confidence-building measures. He also stressed that the Turkish dimension is unavoidable in any solution. Erhurman referred to the need for a second vehicle checkpoint in Nicosia and presented a map aiming for four checkpoints, starting from Mia Milia and reaching Pyrgos and Louroutzina. He also noted that the opening of new checkpoints is not economically beneficial for Turkish Cypriots.
