Texas Executes First Death Row Inmate of 2025

Charles Victor Thompson, 55, was executed in Texas for the 1998 murder of his former girlfriend and her boyfriend. He was the first death row inmate to be executed in the state in 2025. The case had a complex history, as his initial conviction was overturned due to unconstitutional conduct by the prosecution, but a new trial resulted in the same sentence. Thompson briefly escaped from prison after his conviction but was quickly apprehended. This execution comes during a period of increased executions in the United States, with 47 in 2025, the highest number since 2009. Most executions were carried out by lethal injection, but there was also a use of other methods, such as nitrogen gas inhalation and firing squad. The death penalty has been abolished in 23 US states.
