Livestock Farmers Demand Fair Compensation for Foot-and-Mouth Disease Impact

Livestock farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease held a meeting in Voroklini, where they presented specific demands to the government. They are requesting fair and adequate compensation, considering current market prices, and coverage for lost income during periods of inability to work. They also propose the freezing of loan obligations until their businesses can resume operations. The demands include state support for the import of animals from abroad with a subsidy for freight costs, aiming for a faster restoration of livestock. They also request ensuring participation in European programs through the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (KOAP). Another request concerns the coverage of social insurance for the livestock farmers and their employees during restrictions. The Municipality of Larnaca, through an announcement, expresses its full support for the affected livestock farmers and calls on the relevant Ministries and Services to take immediate specific measures for the sustainability of the primary sector and the protection of the local economy. The announcement states that the Municipality will continue to monitor developments and remain in communication with the involved parties. Furthermore, the Municipality of Larnaca secured, through the Bank of Cyprus, protective suits and pharmaceutical preparations to immediately cover the urgent needs of the livestock farmers. Consistent support for the sector and cooperation with stakeholders are key pillars of the effort to address the impact of foot-and-mouth disease.
