Cheese Makers Association: Time for Immediate Action After Foot-and-Mouth Disease Cases

The Cyprus Cheese Makers Association states that the situation with foot-and-mouth disease cases is very serious and requires responsibility, composure, coordination and immediate action from all parties. While the outbreak of the disease is not within their control, they note that its consequences directly affect agricultural production, cheese making and the economy. The Association is in communication and cooperation with the authorities and is ready to contribute to any effort to protect livestock farming. They assure that their members' products are safe, as foot-and-mouth disease does not affect public health or transmit through food. They request the Veterinary Services to implement all necessary measures to limit the disease and strengthen controls and biosecurity measures. In addition, they call on the Ministry of Justice and the Police to immediately investigate any criminal offenses related to the outbreak and spread of the disease, especially regarding possible illegal trafficking of animal feed from the occupied territories. They request investigations into reports of illegal trade of animal feed. Finally, they appeal to all livestock farmers to follow the instructions of the authorities and immediately report any suspected cases. The Association recognizes the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Veterinary Services and assures that its members have strengthened biosecurity measures.
