Paroutis: Syllouris Wouldn't Have Been Convicted for Winking

Following the acquittal of Demetris Syllouris and Christakis Tziovanis in the Golden Passports case, journalist Sotiris Paroutis commented on ENIMERWSI TORA show on the differences between political ethics and legal responsibility. He noted that the case suffered weaknesses, as the incriminating video from Al Jazeera was not submitted to the court, preventing the proof of the charges. Mr. Paroutis emphasized that both Syllouris and Tziovanis faced the consequences of political ethics with their resignation, similar to the case of "videogate," where ethical issues may arise even without criminal prosecutions. He stressed that the lack of evidence in court does not absolve responsibility for political ethics. Furthermore, the journalist referred to the inability of the Legal Service to prove scandals that become public, due to the power of the law firms involved. He concluded that Syllouris's innocence does not lie in the lack of exemplary behavior, such as winking, but in the fact that there was no sufficient evidence to substantiate a criminal offense.
