Disagreement Over Foreclosure Solutions: DIKO and AKEL Clash

There is strong disagreement between DIKO and AKEL regarding proposals to address foreclosures. DIKO Deputy President Christiana Erotokritou stated that it is positive that the executive branch has submitted proposals for borrowers, which concern the expansion of the out-of-court dispute resolution body. She proposed a 9-month suspension of the foreclosure process to allow time for a consensual solution. On the other hand, AKEL MP Aristos Damianou accused the government of misleading, arguing that there is no substantial proposal to protect borrowers, but only promises. He stressed that AKEL will insist on discussing its own proposals in Parliament, which concern the right of access to justice and the suspension of foreclosure until the case is heard. Mr. Damianou accused the government of repeating old announcements that were never implemented, and that it reacts only when AKEL promotes its own proposals. He emphasized the need for permanent mechanisms to protect good-faith borrowers. Both sides agree that the effects of the Middle East conflict, and particularly the increase in oil prices, require measures from the government to protect middle and low-income groups.
