750 Complaints Filed with Anti-Corruption Authority in Three Years - How Many Have Been Investigated?

In the past three years, the Anti-Corruption Authority has received a total of 750 complaints. The proposal for immediate mutual information between the Authority and the Tax Commissioner in the event of suspected corruption offenses has received a positive response from both bodies. The purpose of the proposal is to establish a communication channel to avoid political pressure on the Commissioner during a tax audit following a report from the Authority. The Tax Commissioner, Sotiris Markidis, stated that he has not received political interference in audits, but believes it is ethically correct to inform the Police or the Legal Service before conducting an audit if there is an investigation underway. The Legal Service expressed reservations about potential legal obstacles from the parallel conduct of a criminal investigation and a tax audit, emphasizing the need for coordination. The Transparency Commissioner, Haris Poyiatzis, proposed extending the Commissioner's information to include findings concerning public officials. The discussion highlighted the need for clarification in the text of the law regarding the conditions for activating the information and the limitations on audits of assets outside Cyprus.
