UN Envoy Meets Cypriot Leaders in Bid to Revive Talks

The UN Secretary-General's special envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, is in Cyprus to attempt to revive talks on the Cyprus issue. She will meet with President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman separately and then together. President Christodoulides will approach the meetings in good faith, seeking to resume negotiations from where they left off in Crans Montana. The Greek Cypriot side is open to discussing Confidence-Building Measures, such as facilitating crossings. On the other hand, Erhurman insists on the prerequisite of political equality as a key condition for resuming negotiations. This stance is seen as creating obstacles. The discussion of political equality has already been raised in the past, with UN resolutions providing definitions but also linking the concept to other issues concerning the solution of the Cyprus problem.
