Foot-and-Mouth Disease Alert: 23 Farms Quarantined – 260 Cows to be Culled

A state of emergency has been declared in Cyprus following the confirmation of a foot-and-mouth disease case in a cattle farm in Livadia. European and national protocols for tackling the disease have been immediately implemented. 23 farms have been placed under quarantine, and daily sampling will be conducted. The culling of 260 cows from the affected farm will begin tomorrow. The Veterinary Services have recalled staff licenses and are reinforcing their personnel with veterinarians from other provinces. Authorities reassure the public that foot-and-mouth disease does not transmit to humans and that dairy products are safe due to strict controls and pasteurization.
