Cypriot President Visits Italy, Discusses Bilateral Relations with President Mattarella

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, paid an official visit to Italy, meeting with the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella. This visit marks the first official visit by a Cypriot President to Italy in 14 years and follows two years after President Mattarella's historic visit to Cyprus, which was the first by an Italian President to the island. During the meeting, the two Presidents discussed strengthening bilateral relations between Cyprus and Italy, which is a priority for the Cypriot government. President Christodoulides emphasized the common cultural identity and long-standing friendship ties between the two countries. Furthermore, President Christodoulides referred to Cyprus's assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1st and the need for coordination with Italy for a more autonomous and open Union. An agreement was reached with Prime Minister Meloni to work towards institutionalizing cooperation and upgrading bilateral relations to a strategic level. As part of the visit, the two Presidents inaugurated an archaeological exhibition highlighting the common culture of Cyprus and Italy, further underlining the strong historical and cultural ties between the two countries. The visit was accompanied by military honors and the playing of national anthems.
