President of Cyprus Seeks Leaders' Meeting in April - Message for Restarting Dialogue

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, met with the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Kazim Dian, at the Presidential Palace. The meeting focused on the renewal of UNFICYP's mandate and the ongoing violations in the buffer zone, as well as the situation in Varosha. President Christodoulides emphasized the need to maintain the peacekeeping force as long as the Turkish occupation continues and expressed the Government's political will to resume negotiations from where they left off. Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, stated that the violations of the occupying army in the buffer zone and the revocation of illegal actions in the enclosed city of Varosha were discussed, as well as the latest Security Council resolution (2815/2026). Reference was also made to the President Christodoulides' meeting with the UN Secretary-General in Brussels in March and the Secretary-General's approach to restarting negotiations. Asked about the role of the Special Representative in promoting the process, the Spokesperson stated that he has an important role, as does the Secretary-General's personal envoy, and that the United Nations can contribute if there is political will from all parties. The Government has already expressed its own will for developments and a return to negotiations. Regarding the possibility of a meeting between the two leaders, the Spokesperson stated that a specific date within April has been proposed, but there has been no response yet from the other side. The proposed date is within April. The Government is awaiting a response and will make relevant announcements once the meeting is scheduled.
