Cyprus's Existing Trade with Mercosur Countries

The discussion surrounding the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia) has sparked reactions. However, official data shows that Cyprus already imports products from Mercosur countries, meaning the agreement primarily concerns the reduction or elimination of tariffs, rather than the start of new imports. Argentina is the largest supplier to Cyprus among the Mercosur countries, with imports worth €64.8 million in 2024, mainly oilseed residues and cakes (animal feed). Brazil is the second-largest supplier, with imports worth €15.18 million, including coffee and other beverages. Imports from Uruguay are almost exclusively rice, while imports from Paraguay and Bolivia are smaller in value. The agreement is expected to primarily affect imports of agricultural products and animal feed from Mercosur countries. Cyprus also imports some industrial products from Mercosur countries, but in smaller quantities. The agreement is expected to create new opportunities for trade between Cyprus and Mercosur, but also raise concerns about competition in local markets.
