Mercosur Deal on Track for EU Implementation – Ball in Latin American Partners’ Court

The European Union is on track to implement the free trade agreement with Mercosur, as the Council has approved both the authorization for signature and the line for its provisional application. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the issue of provisional application has been raised by several European leaders, highlighting the interest in quickly realizing the benefits. However, full implementation of the agreement depends on the completion of internal ratification procedures by the Mercosur countries and their declaration of readiness. The European Commission will only activate when the Latin American partners are ready. The agreement is part of a broader geoeconomic strategy of Brussels, aiming to diversify supply chains, improve access to raw materials and markets, and strengthen the EU's strategic and geoeconomic autonomy. In an international environment full of tensions and trade pressures, the promotion of Mercosur is considered a tool to strengthen the European single market and its resilience. The European Parliament’s decision to request a review of the agreement by the EU Court of Justice is no longer expected to cause delays. The EU seeks to strengthen its geopolitical position through the agreement, while also ensuring the protection of its interests against any form of coercion.
