Homeless Lebanese Family with Children Sparks Outrage in Cyprus

An eight-member family from Lebanon, who had applied for international protection in Cyprus, found themselves homeless and sleeping on suitcases, causing shock and concern. The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights investigated the case and requested a report from the relevant authorities. The Committee President, Irene Charalambidou, expressed her outrage at the situation, emphasizing that Cyprus cannot violate human dignity. The Deputy Minister of Migration, Nikolaos Ioannidis, stated that the family had submitted multiple requests, including international protection, relocation, and asylum, which created difficulties in managing the case. He stressed that the situation was isolated and that efforts are being made to prevent similar incidents in the future, with the creation of new reception centers based on EU standards. The lack of suitable accommodation for asylum seekers and foreigners about to depart, due to legal restrictions, contributed to the family's homelessness.
