Cyprus Engineering Chamber Proposes Actions for Wildfire Prevention

The Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) emphasizes the urgent need for early and coordinated preventive action to prevent wildfires in the countryside. It predicts that this year's prolonged low-intensity rainfall will lead to intense vegetation growth, which, combined with the high summer temperatures, will create a large volume of flammable fuel. ETEK proposes specific actions, such as reducing fuel load, conducting controlled burns and controlled grazing, and strengthening infrastructure. It points out that cleaning and passive fire protection measures should begin immediately, with a clear prioritization of high-risk areas. At the same time, ETEK recognizes the efforts to reorganize civil protection but stresses that institutional changes take time to bear fruit. It therefore proposes a new effort to organize and take passive fire protection measures, utilizing community clusters and scientific personnel. Specifically, ETEK proposes accelerating the reduction of fuel load, creating firebreaks around villages, cleaning around buildings, and addressing the problem of illegal landfills, which act as points of ignition or acceleration of fires.
