Emergency EU Summit to Discuss EU-US Relations in Brussels

An Emergency European Council is convening today in Brussels at 8:00 PM (Greece time) to discuss EU-US relations, which are experiencing increased volatility. Despite more positive signals in the last 24 hours, the EU deems a discussion at a high political level necessary. The agenda includes the issue of Greenland, potential trade threats against EU member states, as well as broader security and geopolitical issues such as Ukraine and Arctic security. The convening of the Council was prompted by the threat of a trade war from US President Donald Trump, which he later withdrew after an agreement with NATO regarding Greenland. Senior EU officials state that the new US administration is characterized by a new style, policies, and attitudes, while the EU seeks to stabilize the relationship based on mutual benefit. The need to accelerate the agenda for “EU strategic autonomy” is highlighted, as well as the rapid, coordinated, and calm response of the member states. Regarding Greenland, issues remain open, while the EU expresses full solidarity with Denmark. In the field of trade, the EU states it is ready to react in the event of threats being confirmed. Finally, Trump's “Board of Peace” will be put on the table as part of the overall discussion, with most member states already expressing their refusal to participate.
