Cyprus Presidency Aims to Strengthen European Shipping Competitiveness

The Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Hadjimanoli, highlighted the clear focus of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU on strengthening the competitiveness of European shipping at the 9th Capital Link Shipping Forum in Limassol. Shipping faces increased uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, market volatility, and the green/digital transition, but has proven its ability to adapt and lead. Cypriot shipping has achieved positive results in recent years, with a 23% increase in the capacity of the ship registry and a 17% increase in the contribution of the ship management sector to GDP. Cyprus ranks among the top international ship management centers. The Deputy Ministry of Shipping focuses on maintaining the quality, resilience and sustainability of the sector, with an emphasis on regulatory predictability, high safety standards and incentives for the green and digital transition. Cyprus has evolved into a comprehensive shipping center with a reliable European registry and a dynamic ecosystem of services. The Deputy Minister stressed the need for realistic and global solutions to decarbonization and digital transformation, with close cooperation between the state and industry. Cyprus actively participates in the International Maritime Organization and the EU, supporting fair competition. The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU is an opportunity to promote balanced policies that strengthen competitiveness and support the transition.
