Cyprus Websites Targeted by Cyberattacks

Several websites in Cyprus have been targeted by cyberattacks in recent days, specifically Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. The Commissioner of Communications, Giorgos Michailidis, stated that these attacks are the most common and relatively harmless, as they overload the pages with artificially increased traffic, making them temporarily inaccessible. Mr. Michailidis mentioned that the attacks do not exclusively target government websites and there doesn't appear to be a specific pattern in the targeted pages. The Digital Security Authority (DSA) monitors the phenomenon 24/7 and informs critical infrastructure. The reason for these attacks remains unclear, with possible connections to the current situation in the region or the Cypriot Presidency, but also the possibility of being random. The attacks are not continuous but occur intermittently. The DSA provides information and technical assistance when needed, but protecting against such attacks requires website owners to invest in specialized services that can manage incoming traffic and ensure the continued operation of the website. The effectiveness of these services depends on their cost.
