Strategic Autonomy, Maritime Security Priorities of Cypriot Presidency, Palmas Says

Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency to the Security and Defence (SEDE) Committee of the European Parliament, focusing on the EU's strategic autonomy, maritime security and strengthening the European defence industry. The Presidency's motto, “A Sovereign Union. Open to the World”, expresses the ambition for a Europe that acts effectively while maintaining its alliances. The main pillars of the Presidency's orientation include support for Ukraine, strengthening the defence industry through the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP), investing in maritime security, and ensuring and supporting humanitarian operations. Mr. Palmas stressed the importance of protecting critical maritime infrastructure and key maritime routes from hybrid and cyberattacks. The Defence Minister recognised the crucial role of the SEDE Committee in shaping European defence policy and highlighted its contribution to enhancing transparency and democratic accountability in this area. Cyprus reaffirmed its steadfast support for Ukraine and the need for a future settlement based on full respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Presidency places particular emphasis on the readiness and coherence of actions, as well as on strengthening joint procurement and synergies between Member States.
