Farmers Protest EU-Mercosur Agreement in Cyprus

Farmers and organizations are staging a protest in Nicosia today, outside the House of Europe, against the EU-Mercosur agreement. Organizers have called on citizens, especially farmers, to participate massively, and a resolution will be submitted to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The protest takes place amidst mobilizations in other European countries. MEP Giorgos Georgiou expressed concerns about the agreement, noting that the European Court’s decision will be issued in 18-24 months, but the agreement will be implemented immediately, calling it an institutional deviation. Mr. Georgiou pointed out that other countries, such as Greece, protected their products during negotiations, while Cyprus failed to secure even halloumi. Mercosur products are often produced using pesticides banned in the EU, and at a lower cost, making them more competitive. Representatives of the Consumer Association and the Laona Foundation also expressed their concerns about the potential negative impacts of the agreement on local production and food quality.
