US and Israel Defend Attack on Iran at UN

The United States and Israel yesterday defended the legality of their military operations against Iran at the UN Security Council, while the Iranian ambassador denounced a “war crime” and “crime against humanity” due to civilian deaths. US Ambassador Mike Waltz argued that the US is taking legitimate measures to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, citing Security Council resolutions and sanctions. Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon denounced the “hypocrisy” of Security Council members who condemn the attacks by Israel and the US, but not those by Iran. He argued that Israel had no choice but to act due to the threat from the Iranian regime. Iranian Ambassador Amir Said Iravani spoke of a “war crime” and “crime against humanity” referring to the deaths of civilians, including children. He also denounced the “lack of moral clarity” of the UN and argued that Iran is exercising its right to self-defense. The Security Council meeting highlighted the deep division among its members on the issue. Some countries criticized only the attacks by the US and Israel, others only Iran's retaliation, while others called for de-escalation.
