Cyprus to Present EU Presidency Priorities in Strasbourg

The President of the Republic of Cyprus will present the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU tomorrow in Strasbourg. The agenda for the session includes important issues such as the Mercosur agreement, the situation in Iran, and the issue of Greenland. Cyprus will focus on strengthening the EU's strategic autonomy while maintaining its commitment to a multilateral approach and international law. The Presidency's priorities include security and defense, economic and energy security, migration management, and crisis preparedness. Emphasis will also be placed on competitiveness, the green transition, and digital sovereignty. Cyprus will promote EU enlargement, support for Ukraine, and cooperation with countries in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. Regarding Greenland, European governments have rejected US plans to annex the island, warning that such a move would undermine state sovereignty and transatlantic security. Denmark and Greenland have stressed that decisions regarding the status of Greenland are their responsibility and prefer cooperation to unilateral actions. At the same time, the European Parliament is expected to approve a resolution on the situation in Iran, condemning the suppression of protests and calling for respect for human rights.
