Phidias Under Scrutiny by European Control Institutions

MEP Phidias Panagiotou is at the center of an investigation by European control institutions, specifically the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) and OLAF (European Anti-Fraud Office). The investigation was launched following complaints alleging the misuse of European funds. The complaints concern the use of funds intended for the rental of a political office, which allegedly covered the rent of a luxury apartment in Limassol. In addition, there are allegations of potential fraud related to the cost of the application associated with his party, “Direct Democracy”. According to information, the Cypriot Independent Authority Against Corruption has referred the complaints to the EPPO, which are being examined in parallel by OLAF. The investigation focuses on the rental of a luxury apartment in Limassol, which was declared as a “political office” with a monthly rent of approximately €4,500. Phidias Panagiotou states that he has not received official notification of the investigation and refers to official announcements from the European Public Prosecutor's Office. The European Parliament reminds that the funds received by MEPs have a specific destination and must be used in accordance with the rules.
