Cyprus Interior Ministry Investigates Turkish Cypriot Properties in Paphos

The Cyprus Ministry of Interior is launching investigations into Turkish Cypriot properties, particularly in Paphos, following allegations involving the Paphos Municipality and former Mayor, Phaedon Phaedonos. A team from the Ministry will conduct sample checks of leases, including those to the Paphos Municipality, to ensure proper management and compliance with regulations. The audit campaign is not limited to Paphos but will be extended to other provinces as part of a broader effort to rationalize the management of Turkish Cypriot properties. The General Director of the Ministry of Interior, Ellikos Ilias, stated that the investigation concerning the Mayor of Paphos is ongoing and no detailed statements can be made at this stage. He also mentioned interventions in the Mackenzie area, where lease problems were resolved and low rents were revised. Furthermore, he clarified that a previous administrative investigation into the management of Turkish Cypriot properties in Paphos was conducted during the period 2021-2022, following previous complaints. The Service for the Management of Turkish Cypriot Properties will continue audits in all provinces, on a sampling basis, to ensure rational management. In parallel, the Ministry of Interior is monitoring developments at the Paphos Municipality following the decision to suspend the Mayor. Mr. Ilias stated that normality has been restored and expects developments regarding a municipal councilor who must choose between his position and his profession. The overall process aims at the transparent and legal management of Turkish Cypriot properties for the benefit of Cyprus.
