EU Scrutinizes Illegal Arms Trafficking

The European Union is addressing the issue of illegal arms trafficking, with the first meeting of the Council of the EU Working Group taking place on March 9, 2026, in Brussels. The discussion focused on the European Commission's proposal for a Directive to combat the phenomenon, which is a priority for the Cypriot Presidency in the field of Criminal Law. The Directive aims to harmonize criminal offenses and penalties among member states, as well as strengthen cooperation between competent authorities. Particular emphasis is placed on the registration of weapon markings to improve traceability and enhance public safety. The proposal covers a wide range of offenses, including the illegal trafficking, manufacture, alteration, and possession of firearms, as well as the illegal possession of digital designs for private manufacturing. The Working Group is chaired by the Attorney General A' of Cyprus, Eleni Kouzoupis, with the Cypriot Republic playing a leading role in the initiative. Nikolaos Makridis represents the Legal Service, while Vasilis Bissa participates as an expert. The Cyprus Police also participates in the work, with Ioanna Dimitriou as Vice-President and Eleni Kountouri as national representative. This initiative underscores the EU's commitment to combating illegal arms trafficking and enhancing the safety of citizens.
