Cyprus' Constantinos Herodotou Shortlisted for European Banking Authority Presidency

Constantinos Herodotou, former Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus and current Chairman of the Greek CrediaBank, has made it to the 'short list' of two final candidates for the position of President of the European Banking Authority (EBA). The EBA, based in Paris, is an independent EU body that regulates the banking sector, including conducting European stress tests. The selection process began in November, following the resignation of the previous president, and has entered its final phase with the involvement of EU political bodies. The appointment will be ratified by the European Parliament. Mr. Herodotou is considered an underdog, as he comes from a smaller member state, but his experience as a central banker and in the private sector is not going unnoticed. He has already received positive feedback from the European People's Party, the Greens, and the Patriots. His competitor is Francois-Louis Michaud, the current Executive Director of the EBA. The EBA was founded in 2011 and plays a critical role in ensuring the stability of the banking system in the EU, creating a single regulatory framework for all banks. Mr. Herodotou's candidacy is a historic moment, as he is the first Cypriot to come so close to a leadership position in a European organization.
