Cyprus Dam Levels at 21%, Water Department Reports

The overall dam capacity in Cyprus stands at 21%, according to the Water Development Department (WDD). This is lower compared to the same period last year, when capacity was at 25.4% with a stored water volume of 73.8 million cubic meters. This year, the stored volume is 61.15 million cubic meters, marking a significant decrease. The inflow of water into the dams has decreased due to the lack of rainfall in early March. The WDD emphasizes that the effective replenishment of water reserves depends not only on the total amount of rainfall but also on its geographical distribution, with a focus on rainfall on the southwestern side of Troodos. Despite a satisfactory water harvest in February, the situation remains difficult due to low overall reserves. The WDD expresses hope for rainfall in the last two weeks of March, especially on the southwestern side of Troodos, to increase inflows into the dams. Additionally, the significant contribution of desalination plants to meeting drinking water needs is highlighted, particularly in the provinces of Limassol, Nicosia, and Larnaca, where they cover approximately 70% of the needs.
