Foot-and-Mouth Disease Issue in Brussels - Questions from Cypriot MEPs

The issue of foot-and-mouth disease and its management with mass culling of animals is at the center of discussion in Cyprus, with Cypriot MEPs raising it before the European Commission. The MEPs are seeking clarification on European contribution to solving the problem, highlighting the specificities of Cypriot livestock farming and exploring alternatives to mass culling. Lucas Fourlas (DISY/EPP) stated that he is in contact with European institutions and has requested technical and financial support from the EU, as well as ensuring that decisions protect producers and the credibility of Cypriot products. Mr. Fourlas stressed that the management of foot-and-mouth disease must be done responsibly, with scientific evidence and respect for animals and farmers. He proposes focusing on the isolation of infected animals, strengthening hygiene measures in livestock farms and providing substantial financial support to farmers affected by the disease. He believes that the EU should provide special compensation and support programs for the sector to help farmers cope with losses and continue their activities.
