Parliamentary Committee to Discuss Foreclosure Proposals on March 9th

The House Finance Committee will begin discussions on March 9th regarding proposed legislation concerning the protection of borrowers and guarantors from foreclosures. MP Aristos Damianos of AKEL emphasized the need to restore balance between banks and citizens, as well as to reinstate the ability to seek legal recourse to protect primary residences and business premises. He accused previous governments and the DISY and DIKO parties of ignoring AKEL's proposals, highlighting the severe social consequences of foreclosures, with thousands of citizens losing their properties. Mr. Damianos argued that the existing framework does not provide adequate protection for borrowers and guarantors and that many cases are already at an advanced stage, making reversal difficult. He called for clarification of the political intentions of the Christodoulides government and urged all political forces to take a position on the issue of foreclosures before the end of the Parliament's term. The President of the Ecologists Movement, Stavros Papadouris, confirmed the start of the discussion of the proposed laws on March 9th, emphasizing that these are legislations that have been pending for years. The discussion is expected to focus on the need for a fairer and more balanced framework to protect borrowers and guarantors from foreclosures. Overall, the discussion is expected to be intense, as the parties have different approaches to the issue of foreclosures. AKEL seeks to restore access to justice, while the government and other parties are expected to present their own proposals to address the problem.
