Parliamentary Committee to Discuss Foreclosure Proposals on March 9th

The House Finance Committee will begin discussions on March 9th regarding proposed legislation concerning the protection of borrowers and guarantors from foreclosures and seizures. The Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, will also attend the session. The goal is to reach a solution before the end of the current parliamentary term. MP Aristos Damianou of AKEL emphasized the need to restore balance between citizens and financial institutions, as well as the need for fairer regulations for borrowers and guarantors. He argued that previous proposals from his party had not received a substantial response, while accusing the DISY and DIKO parties of unjustified delays. Mr. Damianou stated that thousands of citizens have lost or are at risk of losing their property due to foreclosures, while proposing the restoration of the ability to appeal to the courts to protect primary residences and business premises. He also mentioned that there have been warnings since 2018 about violations of fundamental rights, which were not heeded. The AKEL MP announced that the issue will be raised again before the Committee, with the presence of the Minister of Finance, in order to clarify the government's political intentions. For his part, the President of the Ecologists Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation, Stavros Papadouris, stated that these are legislative proposals that have been before Parliament for years.
