312 Fund Management Companies and Collective Investment Organizations – Where They Invest

At the end of the third quarter of 2023, the number of Management Companies and Collective Investment Organizations in Cyprus amounted to 312, a decrease compared to 2022. Despite the reduction in the number of companies, the total assets under management increased by 7.5% to €11.4 billion. These companies are divided into externally managed UCI, internally managed UCI and external managers. The largest portion of assets under management comes from AIF (63%), followed by AIF and UCITS Management Companies (17%), UCITS Management Companies (10%), small AIF (9%) and UCIs supervised by non-Cypriot companies (1%). As for the investments of UCITS, 85.8% is directed to movable securities, while OEE, OEEPAP and KOEE invest significantly in Private Equity (30.7%) and real estate (17%). A significant proportion of private equity investments concern multi-strategy funds, growth funds and venture capital funds. Also, 69.7% of total assets under management are held by Cypriot UCIs, with 24.8% of these investments relating to Cyprus, mainly through investments in Private Equity and real estate. Regarding investors, private individuals dominate in UCITS (99.2%), while in OEE, OEEPAP and KOEE, investors are categorized as well-informed (64.7%), professionals (26%) and individuals (9.4%). During the third quarter, investments amounted to €471.6 million in Energy, €581.8 million in Shipping, €106.9 million in Fintech and €97.9 million in Sustainable Investments.
