National Cancer Institute Bill to Parliament on April 2nd

The bill for the creation of the National Cancer Institute will be put to a vote in the Plenary Session of the Parliament on April 2nd, after the completion of its clause-by-clause discussion in the Parliamentary Health Committee. The creation of the Institute was welcomed by MPs, however, reservations and suggestions were expressed regarding specific provisions. The President of the Health Committee, Efthymios Diplaros, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the discussion and emphasized that the Institute will play a role in the prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, supportive care, and rehabilitation of cancer. It will coordinate and advise on oncology issues, without directly providing health services. From the side of AKEL, Marina Nikolaou expressed concerns about the content of the bill, believing that it assigns excessive powers to the Institute. AKEL submitted amendments to ensure the complementary, scientific, and advisory role of the Institute and to strengthen transparency and accountability. MP Andreas Apostolou (DIKO) stated that Cyprus will join the countries that have a National Cancer Institute, which will play a role in the formulation of the national strategy for tackling cancer. MP Marinos Sizopoulos (EDEK) emphasized the need to strengthen prevention and early diagnosis.
