Ministry of Interior Team to Investigate Allegations Against Paphos Mayor Regarding Turkish Cypriot Properties

The Ministry of Interior of Cyprus has launched investigations into the leases of Turkish Cypriot properties in the Municipality of Paphos, following allegations concerning the suspended Mayor of Paphos. A team from the Ministry is expected to travel to Paphos next week to inspect the leases, including those made to the Municipality. The General Director of the Ministry of Interior, Ellikos Ilias, stated that this is part of a broader campaign of sample checks of Turkish Cypriot property contracts throughout Cyprus. The aim is to ensure the proper management of these properties and compliance with regulations. Mr. Ilias noted that the Ministry is making efforts to rationalize the management of Turkish Cypriot properties and that an investigation is underway into the management of properties in Paphos, which had also begun during the period 2021-2022. According to information, the previous investigation had identified problems with the leases and had proposed improvements to the way the Mayor of Paphos intervened in the procedures. Additionally, Mr. Ilias mentioned that the Turkish Cypriot Property Management Service will continue to conduct checks in all provinces, while referring to the restoration of normalcy in the operation of the Municipality of Paphos after the suspension of the Mayor and the pending decision of the Municipal Councilor regarding the retention of his position or return to his profession.
