US Considers 'Surgical Strikes' Against Iranian Officials Amid Rising Tensions

The US is reportedly considering “surgical strikes” against Iranian officials and military commanders believed to be responsible for the crackdown on protests in Iran. This decision comes despite significant disagreements within the US government regarding the potential consequences and retaliation from Tehran. The Trump administration has been discussing a military strike against Iran for almost a month, although President Trump initially appeared to back down. Former officials and analysts believe the de-escalation is temporary and that Trump has not abandoned the goal of “regime change”. Concurrently, the US is bolstering its military presence in the region, deploying additional warplanes, air defense systems, and warships. The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln has been deployed to the area, carrying F-35 and F/A-18 fighter jets, as well as EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft. Fighter squadrons of F-15s have also been deployed to Jordan. The increased US military activity is causing concern among countries in the region, who fear an escalation of tensions. The situation remains fluid, and the possibility of military conflict remains real. Sources indicate that Washington has replenished stocks of anti-air and anti-missile systems depleted during the recent Iran-Israel war, although limitations remain due to ongoing support for Ukraine.
