Greece Acquires Photos of Kaisariani Execution

Photos depicting the moments before the execution of 200 communists by the Nazis in Kaisariani are now in the possession of the Greek state. The collection of 262 photographs, 16 documents, and 4 old banknotes had been offered for sale by a Belgian collector via eBay and was acquired with the assistance of the Greek embassy in Belgium. The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, emphasized the speed of the ministry's response and the successful completion of a complex project that included documenting the authenticity, designating the collection as a monument, documenting its provenance, and negotiating its complete transfer to the Greek public sector. The entire process highlights the historical and cultural value of the photographs, which are evidence of the morality and patriotism of those executed. The Minister expressed her satisfaction with the return of these important historical testimonies to Greece. The Minister of Culture thanked all the staff and collaborators who contributed to the successful completion of the transfer, underlining the importance of protecting cultural heritage and preserving historical memory.
