Bill Proposed to Combat Taxi Piracy in Cyprus

The Parliamentary Committee on Transport has submitted a bill to combat taxi piracy, which includes significant increases in fines, suspension of driving licenses, and vehicle impoundment. Committee Chairman Alekos Tryfonidis described the proposal as a "huge step" in addressing the problem, which has affected taxi professionals. The proposal came after consultations with the Minister of Transport, the Licensing Authority, and industry professionals. Dinos Konstantinou, President of the Pan-Cypriot Taxi Association (POAT), expressed hope that the bill will provide a solution to combat piracy, noting that previous legislation had loopholes that allowed the continuation of illegal activity by private vehicles and applications. The process of submitting the bill was rapid, with Mr. Konstantinou expressing satisfaction with the speed at which the problem was addressed, in contrast to the past when it took years to reach a final proposal. This demonstrates, according to Mr. Konstantinou, that when there is political will, there is also a way. The bill aims to protect the public interest and the safety of passengers using private vehicles, which are not covered by the same regulations and controls as licensed taxis. The passage of the bill is expected to provide relief to taxi professionals and improve competitive conditions in the industry.
