Early Stages of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Battle – Up to Six Months to Control

Veterinary authorities state that the battle against foot-and-mouth disease is still in its early stages, estimating that controlling the disease could take up to six months, depending on the progress of vaccinations. Cyprus will return to the status of a country free from foot-and-mouth disease months after the complete disappearance of the virus from animals. Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiou explained that the virus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly, making mass vaccination essential. The culling of animals is carried out to ensure the quality and adequacy of the livestock, as the virus reduces milk production and weakens animals. Ms. Georgiou stressed that the disease has economic consequences due to the reduction in milk and meat production, as well as restrictions on exports. However, the production of halloumi is not affected, due to the boiling process that kills the virus. Effective control of the disease and the re-inclusion of Cyprus in the list of countries free from foot-and-mouth disease are vital for the economy and public health. Veterinary authorities call on livestock farmers to cooperate in order to limit the spread of the disease.
