Lawyers of Couple Detained for Terrorism and Deported from Cyprus Threaten Legal Action

The lawyers of the couple who were detained for 16 days in Cyprus on suspicion of terrorism and subsequently deported are leaving open the possibility of legal action against the Republic of Cyprus. Lawyers Michalis Kazakos and Nikos Koromias express strong criticism of the way the Police handled the case, emphasizing that the couple's detention for such a long period without evidence of guilt is problematic. They point out that the incident damages Cyprus's image as a safe tourist destination and that Cyprus should be a rule of law state with respect for fundamental rights and personal freedom. They state that their clients reserve all legal rights. The couple was arrested on February 26th, based on information linking them to photographing Israeli interests in Paphos and the 28-year-old as an agent of Iran. However, after 16 days of detention, they were released without evidence confirming the charges. The lawyers emphasize that the case could have been handled differently, so as not to damage Cyprus's image and not violate the rights of their clients.
