In the Land of the Humorless

Kim Jong-un, the dictator of North Korea, has chosen his 13-year-old daughter, Kim Ju-ae, as his successor in the leadership of the country. This decision recalls his father, Kim Jong-il's, choice of him as successor. The author recalls a visit to the border area of Mount Kumgang in North Korea in 2007, where he observed the destitution of the inhabitants and the false happiness projected by the regime. North Korea remains an isolated and oppressive country, with hundreds of thousands of dissenters held in concentration and forced labor camps. The country continues to project an image of strength and prosperity, but the reality is very different. The rise in temperature accelerates the incubation process of the virus within the mosquito, increasing the likelihood of spread. The author describes the images of impoverished life in the countryside, with peasants working with ancient tools and animals grazing on arid land. The performance of the Moranbong acrobatic team, although impressive, was merely a showcase for the inhumane regime. The situation in North Korea remains worrying, with the absence of freedom and oppression continuing.
